Sydney East: La Perouse Aboriginal Walking Tour
Natcha Cultural Tours | La Perouse, Botany Bay
Where First Contact
Meets Living Culture
Sydney's most historically significant Aboriginal coastal site, on Dharawal Country.
In January 1788, the French La Perouse expedition and the British First Fleet arrived at Botany Bay within days of each other. For the Dharawal people, this was not the beginning of history. It was a rupture in a story that had been unfolding for over 60,000 years.
The La Perouse Aboriginal Walking Tour is a 2-hour cultural experience led by Eric Brown, Traditional Custodian and licensed interpreter of sacred Aboriginal rock engravings. Beginning at the La Perouse Museum, you will be welcomed with a traditional smoking welcome before walking ancient coastal pathways overlooking Botany Bay, visiting significant cultural sites, and hearing the stories of a people whose connection to this Country has never been broken.
This is not a history lesson. This is living culture.
What You Will Experience
Smoking Welcome
The experience opens with a traditional smoking welcome at the La Perouse Museum. Eric welcomes the group to Dharawal Country and sets the tone for what lies ahead.
First Contact History Walk
Walk the site where two worlds collided in 1788. Eric shares the Dharawal perspective on first contact, colonial history, and the ongoing presence of Aboriginal people at Botany Bay.
Significant Cultural Sites
Visit sacred sites along the coastal pathway, including Aboriginal rock engravings that Eric is exclusively authorised by NSW National Parks to interpret. Hear stories that have been carried across thousands of years.
Resilience and Ongoing Presence
Eric speaks to the strength and continuity of Aboriginal culture in Sydney. This is not a story of the past. It is a story that is still being lived.
Cultural Discussion and Exchange
The experience closes with open conversation on Country. Time to ask questions, reflect, and connect.
